"Duke'n Out Duke" GOP Political Button

This button commemorates the 1988 Republican National Convention, held in New Orleans, Louisiana. The phrase "Duke'n Out Duke" may refer to George Deukmejian, California's 35th Governor who, at the 1988 GOP National Convention, anticipated the acceptance of George H.W. Bush's vice presidential nomination. However, Bush chose Indiana's Senator Dan Quayle instead. Yet, Deukmeijian was a fan favorite, with constant cheers from the crowd and signs proclaiming, "There's Only One Duke," a reference to the 1988 Democratic presidential nominee Michael S. Dukakis and the evident inspiration of the "Duke'n Out Duke" button. Illinois native and President of the United States Ronald Reagan was also in attendance.
