Louis Sloman is the third child from the right. Over twenty years later, Louis' children Robert, Alice, and Mary Lou walked over a mile from their farm to attend this school. Alice could not remember how old she was, but recalled that the first time she sang in front of an audience was in this schoolhouse. Alice Sloman stood with her partner in front of the rest of the school to sing a duet, but when the teacher introduced Alice they called her "Olive" Sloman. Before the pianist had the opportunity to play the first note, Alice spoke up saying, "My name is not Olive, it's Alice." Later in life, Alice's grandchildren would enjoy referring to her endearingly as "Grandma Olive."
