Title

Flyer, Primary Election, Republican Senator Harris W. Fawell for Judge of the Illinois Supreme Court, Second Judicial District, 1976

Description

Tricolor tri-fold campaign flyer for Republican Senator Harris W. Fawell for Judge of the 2nd District, Illinois Supreme Court, 1976 Primary Election; prior to this campaign, he had served as an Illinois Senator from 1963 onward. On the flyer’s obverse, the dexter panel quotes an article from The Chicago Tribune’s political editor, Neil Mehler, lamenting Fawell’s retirement from the Senate to seek the judgeship. The center panel promotes Fawell as a GOP candidate with a synopsis of his qualifications, flanked on the dexter by the GOP party’s elephant logo and the sinister by a black and white profile portrait. The sinister panel displays a monochrome photo of a smiling Fawell above, with black text stating Fawell’s name, candidate office, and the primary election date against a bright blue background below. The flyer’s reverse repeats a similar pattern, with endorsements from retired 2nd District Supreme Court Judge Charles H. Davis, Illinois Comptroller George W. Lindberg, and U. S. Senator Charles H. Percy (R-Illinois) in the dexter panel, but sans center panel, the widened sinister panel instead repeating a reduced grouping of the same two photos from the obverse with a third showing a suited Fawell engaged in penning work at his desk. A synopsis of his Senatorial and legal and judicial accomplishments is displayed above a monochrome candid family portrait of Harris and Ruth Fawell and children Richard, Jane, and John, flanked by mention of family members’ occupations, religious affiliation, and volunteer or civic activities. Fawell is defeated, retiring from politics to concentrate on the practice of law until deciding to run for Congress for the 1984 election. Contributor Mary Hudgins is a former legislative intern who visited the law offices of Fawell in her childhood. A graduate of Sangamon State University (now University of Illinois at Springfield) in Political Science, she is originally from Naperville. She believes that the election items in her personal collection are rare, and wants to insure their preservation through digitization in the 2016 UIS History Harvest project.
