The Chaplain Says

Inspirational Religious Pamphlet, "The Chaplain Says: Before The Whistle Toots" Wright_Tom_Scan_A_2b

Chaplains in the United States Military held precarious positions as they preached brotherly love and tolerance to men in the trenches through their sermons passed through writing and the spoken word. They fought their own battles on moral and spiritual fronts grappling for the souls of the young men who were quickly disillusioned after seeing the atrocities of war on the battlefield. This pamphlet would have been handed out to men returning to the United States after being discharged from service. It encourages men not to give up their faith once they returned to their homes but to “tie up to the church” to keep their spirits high and their characters on the straight and narrow. By creating a community through their church the Chaplain Eric M. North states that their reintegration to society will be easier. In pamphlets such as this one soldiers are now asked to give up the fight in Europe and take up the fight for their own souls by attending church and acting morally.
