Why Carry a New Testament

This publication was written by Bishop William F. McDowell an ordained minister of the Methodist church. In his pamphlet “Why Carry a New Testament” McDowell sought to do what so many of his contemporaries also hoped to achieve, to save the souls of men on the battlefield. This booklet is part of a larger collection of works written for and published by the YMCA for young American soldiers during the first world war. As a Christian organization, the YMCA commissioned well-known leaders within the church, those familiar with the geographic locations that the men would be fighting in, and even members of their own organization to create entertaining, informative, or motivational pamphlets to send to men overseas. Other works of McDowell’s include “The Right Sort of Men for the ministry,” A Man’s Religion: Letters to Men, and Making a personal Faith.
